Questions to ask yourself after a first date.
Did it go well? Whether they text back tomorrow won't tell you. The better answer comes from you, tonight, before the replies start. Here are twenty questions for the ride home: how it felt, what actually happened, where you might be fooling yourself, and what you want next. Five minutes is plenty.
How it felt
Start with the feeling, before you start analysing it.
- Walking away, was I lighter or more tired than when I arrived?
- At what point in the evening did I relax?
- Did I laugh for real, or was I being polite?
- Was I performing a version of myself, or just being me?
- Did I ever glance at the time? What was happening right then?
How it went, honestly
The signs a first date went well have little to do with how fast they reply.
- Did the conversation go both ways, or did one of us carry it?
- What did I learn about them that wasn't on their profile?
- Did the time fly, or drag?
- How did they treat the people serving us?
- Did they take my small no's in their stride: the drink I didn't want, the time I had to leave?
Being straight with yourself
The questions that stop you talking yourself into someone, or out of them.
- Am I excited about them, or about not being single?
- Am I filling in the blanks with who I hope they are?
- Would I be happy if a good friend of mine were dating this person?
- Is there a small thing I'm already making excuses for?
- Does this person fit what I told myself I'm looking for?
What happens next
Decide what you want before your phone decides for you.
- Do I want a second date, or do I just want them to want one?
- What would I want to find out on a second date?
- If they never messaged again, would I feel relieved, disappointed, or neither?
- What's one detail about them I'd want to remember before we speak again?
- What did tonight teach me about the kind of person I keep choosing?
Remember who was who.

Questions, answered.
How do you know if a first date went well?
Look at how it felt more than how it ended. Good signs: the time went quickly, the conversation went both ways, you felt like yourself, they were kind to the people around you and easy about your small no's, and you left curious to know more. Whether they text first, or fast, tells you much less.
What should you do right after a first date?
Get home, let the friend who knew you were out know you're back, then take five minutes with the questions above while it's fresh. Write down how it felt and one or two details. Decide what you want before you open the messages.
How do I decide whether to go on a second date?
Sleep on it, then read what you wrote the night before. If you felt like yourself, want to know more and can't find anything you're making excuses for, say yes. "Not sure" is a fine answer after one date. "I felt drained" usually isn't.
Is there an app for reflecting after a date?
First Date is a private dating journal for exactly this. After each date you can add a star rating, tags, notes and a voice memo with a written transcript, and it keeps quick stats across your own history. There's no account and no server; your journal stays on your phone. It's free for your first five people, and Pro removes that limit.
